P1.6 Flashcards
What does Efficiency mean?
How good a device is at converting energy into useful forms.
What is chemical energy?
It is stored in chemical elements/compounds which can be released in a reaction.
e.g. metabolising foods, burning hydrocarbons
What is elastic potential energy?
Energy stored in a material that has been stretched or compressed which is then released when the constriction is released
e.g. pulled elastic band, stretched metal string
What is electrical energy?
Flow of electrons in an electric current
What is gravitational potential energy?
The energy stored in things that can fall, the high the object the more GPE it has.
What is kinetic energy?
A moving object
What is light energy?
part of the electromagnetic spectrum and energy is carried by photons. It is emitted by anything at a high temperature.
e.g. sun, light bulb
What is nuclear energy?
The energy stored in the nuclei of an atom. energy released when atoms undergo a nuclear reaction.
e.g. fission
What is sound energy?
Carried by the vibrations of sound waves.
e.g. vocal chords, loud speakers
What is thermal energy?
Energy transferred by heating, the hotter the object the more thermal energy.
What is the conservation of energy law?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed ( therefore it must be transferred)
properties of a dull black shiny surface?
Loses energy more quickly
Good radiator/emitter of heat
Good absorber of heat radiation
properties of bright shiny surface?
poor radiator of heat
poor absorber because it reflects heat radiation away
Investigation of heat radiation
matt black beaker and silver shiny beaker, compare temp over time of water.
