P1.1 Flashcards
What’s a transverse wave?
Particles move at a 90 angle to the direction at which it is moving
What’s a Longitudinal wave?
Vibrations back and fourth along the direction of wave travel
What are p-waves?
They are faster moving longitudinal waves
What are s-waves?
They are slower moving transverse waves
What is the Heliocentric model?
-When the sun is in the middle with other planets orbiting around it.
Who is Nicolaus Copernicus?
He created the Heliocentric model which the church strongly disagreed with.
He used the naked eye which is one of the reasons why he couldn’t prove his idea.
What is the Geocentric Model?
The earth is in the middle with other planets orbiting around it.
Who is Galileo Galilei?
He proved the heliocentric idea and discovered the moon had mountains and that Jupiter had moons orbiting it.
Who is Ptolemy?
He came up with the Geocentric model
What does refraction mean?
When a wave changes speed due to a change in boundary density causing a change in direction
What are seismic waves?
They are caused by earthquakes and travel through the earth
What is the wave frequency?
The number of waves passing a point each second
What are electromagnetic waves?
Transverse waves that do not need a medium through which to travel
