P11 Flashcards
Pressure
Pressure (Nm2)(Pa) = Force(N)
———
Area(m2)
Pressure 2
Pressure = Height x Density x 9.8 (Gravity)
Pressure along a horizontal line
Pressure along a horizontal line in a liquid is constant
Why does a dam have a thicker bottom than top?
Because the bottom of the dam is exposed to more water pressure than the top so it needs to counteract the pressure with a thicker stronger wall.
What is atmospheric pressure
Atmospheric pressure is created on a surface by air molecules colliding with the surface.
What is the general trend with atmospheric pressure?
As the altitude increases, the atmospheric pressure decreases.
What is upthrust?
Upthrust is when a force is exerted on the bottom of the object which is greater than the force being exerted on the top of the object.
What happens when an object floats?
When an object floats, the Weight of the object is Equal to the Upthrust.
