P1 Flashcards
The different energy stores
Chemical Kinetic Gravitational potential Elastic potential Thermal Nuclear
What is the conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transferred from one state to another.
What is a system?
A system is a chosen object or a group of objects.
What is a closed-system?
A closed system is an isolated system in which no energy transfers takes place into or out of the system.
What is work?
To move an object with an application.
Work
Work = force x distance
W = F x s
What is friction?
Friction is the resistance to motion of one object moving relative to another.
Gravitational potential energy
Change in gravitational potential energy stores = Weight x Change in height
Kennetic energy
Kennetic energy = 0.5 x mass x speed 2
Elastic energy
Elastic energy = 0.5 x Spring constant x Extention
What is useful energy?
Useful energy is energy transferred to where it is wanted in the way it is wanted.
What is wasted energy?
Wasted energy is the energy that is not usefully transferred.
What is dissipated energy?
Dissipated energy is the energy that is not usefully transferred and stored in less useful ways.
What is efficiency?
Efficiency is the ratio of useful work performed by a machine
Efficiency
Efficiency = useful output energy transferred by the device ÷ total input energy supplied to the device
