p1- polymer enhancments Flashcards
lubricants
. wax reduces the viscosity of polymer.
.makes it less sticky
. allows more shapes to be formed
-allows mouldings temp to be low
-saves energy
Thermal antioxidants
-prevents polymer oxidising or discolouring
- due to excessive heat during process
pigments
-tiny particles mixed into polymer state to give colour
Antistatic
-reduce likelihood pf polymer building static charge
Flame retardants
-reduce likelihood of combustion or spread of fire
eg-plug sockets
Plasticisers
-plastics become less hard and brittle at normal temp
-help in processing because they allow polymers to be formed easily at high temp
fillers
- sawdust and wood flour provide bulk in product
-less polymer is required
-mineral fillers such as chalk, clay help increase thermal conductivity of polymer
-heat up and cool down quickly shorter mould cycle times
biodegradable plasticisers
-makes it more flexible, softer, easier to break down means faster degradation time
Bio-batch additives
-oxy-degradable photodegradable and hydro- degradable
-help reduce degradation time from hundreds of years to a few years or even months
Antioxidants
-helps to reduce environmental deterioration from exposure to oxygen in air
-prevent increased brittleness, surface cracks, pigment discolouration
-garden furniture
UV light stabilisers
-prevent polymer chain from being broken by sunlight
-UV attacks colour loss, brittleness
-used in outdoor toys, play equipment, garden furniture, stadium seats
