P1 Energy Flashcards
What is a system?
An object or group of objects where energy is transferred
What is a closed system?
A system where neither matter nor energy can enter or leave
What is work done?
Energy transferred
What is kinetic energy?
An object that is moving has kinetic energy
What is gravitational potential energy?
The energy required to raise an object to a certain height
What is elastic potential energy?
The stretching or squashing of an object
What is the specific heat capacity of an object?
The energy required to raise the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1C
What is the conservation of energy principle?
Energy can not be created or destroyed, only transferred
What is power?
The rate of doing work
What is conduction?
Where vibrating particles transfer energy to neighbouring particles
What is convection?
Where energetic particles move away from hotter to cooler regions
How can you reduce friction?
Use lubricants
How can you reduce the rate of energy transfer by heating?
- Cavity walls
- Cavity wall insulation
- Loft insulation
- Double-glazed windows
- Draught excluders
What is efficiency?
How much energy is transferred usefully
What are the main fossil fuels?
- Coal
- Oil
- Natural gas
What are the impacts of using fossil fuels?
- They are finite resources
- They all damage the environment
- They are reliable
What are the main renewable energy resources?
- The Sun (solar)
- Wind
- Hydro-electricity
