P- Partial fractions, denominator with repeated linear factors DF Flashcards
What are partial fractions?
The reverse process to adding/ subtracting algebraic fractions
What are 2 types of partial fractions?
1) Linear fractions
2) Repeated linear fractions
What are 2 checks you have to do before undertaking the PF?
1) The fraction is rational (power of x on denominator is higher than that of numerator)
2) Denominator must be fully factorised
What are 2 things about repeated linear fractions?
1) Need to use comparison to find variables
2) Could lead to 2 PF’s
What is comparison when doing repeated linear fractions?
Choose x2’s or x’s, and count how many are in the LHS & RHS and multiply the letter by how many for the RHS, then substitute known values in and move values accordingly
