What are the two types of OTC medication and who can supply them in the pharmacy?
GSL - in a pharmacy, there must be a repsonsible pharmacist for the day, can be supplied even if they are temporarily absent.
Pharmacy only - under supervision of pharmacist
How much psuedoephridine can you supply OTC at one time?
720mg (12 tabs of 60mg)
How much ephredine can you supply at one time OTC?
180mg (12 x 15mg)
How much psuedoephridine and ephridine can you supply at the same time?
None, it is illegal to sell both at the same time.
When should you be suspicious of someone asking for pseduo / ephedrine?
Frequent requests
No cough/ cold symptoms
Aggressive / impatient
Who can give advice on emergency contraception?
The pharmacist must be involved (MEP)
Can you give emergency contraception in advance?
Yes
What is the lower age group limits for ulipristal and levonogestrel?
Levonogestrel is licensed for 16 +
Ulipristal can be given to under 16s.
What should you do if you’re ethically against supplying EHC?
Notify your colleagues in advance. Signpost.
What are the other outside services offering EHC?
GUM clinic, family plannign clinic, PGD providers
How much paracetamol and aspirin can you sell without a prescription (OTC)?
100 tabs (for effervescent and other formulations -use clinical judgement).
*Tip - there are no 100 packs available OTC
What are the OTC indication restrictions for codeine and dyhydrocodeine?
ONLY for acute moderate pain unresponsive to ibuprofen, paracetamol and aspirin. Other indications removed.
What is the additional label required for codeine and dihydrocodeine?
Can cause addiction. for three days use only
How many packs of codeine ) dihydrocodeine can you supply OTC?
Good practice to supply only one packet, larger amounts require a prescription.
