P&D 1 Flashcards
What is OPM
Caterpillars that affect oak, people and animals. They feed on oak leaves. The hairs cause eye and skin irritation.
OPM control?
Winter surveying for old nests
Destruction of egg masses before they hatch
Insecticide in spring
Pheromone trap
Why is compaction bad
Reduces 02 and increases water logging. Does not allow respiration.
Viruses? And how they spread
Grows inside cell, once infected stays throughout life. Results in reduced vigour.
Spread by entering through wound and vectors.
Eg poplar mosaic virus.
3 types of fungi? Which are good?
Saprohytic myrcorrizal good.
Parasitic bad.
How can herbicides be bad
Mis application
Spray drift
Bark absorption.
Air pollution factors
Change of physical chemical conditions of soil. Worse in drought. No distinctive signs in foliage. Factory spillage can lead to short term extreme damage.
Strimmer damage?
Removal of bark and cambium. Leads to ring barking and death.
Hardiness?
Temperature a tree can tolerate. Countries have different hardiness zones.
Factors that influence plant selection
Shape, seasonal interest, flowering period, fruit production, hardiness, ability to cope with water.
Oomycetes and phytophthera,
Control
Water mould, causes spots on leaves, damaged feeding roots.
Disinfect tools and boots, sanitation felling.
Saprophytic?
Feed off dead wood.
Mychorrizal?
Symbiotic relationship
Brown rot?
Attacks cellulose, leaves lignin intact
White rot
Attacks cellulose lignin
