P. 3 Flashcards
What is locomotor system consist of?
Skeleton
Joints
Muscle
Cartilage:
• Softer than bone and slightly elastic
• forms the temporary skeleton of the developing fetus
• composed of modified C.T. In which the cells and fibrous embedded in gel-like matrix
• blood vessels and nerves are ABSENT
• nutrients diffuse via the matrix from blood vessels into the surrounding tissue
• it is covered by a fibrous membrane (perichondrium)
What are the 3 types of cartilage?
- Hyaline cartilage
- Elastic cartilage
- Fibrocartilage
Hyaline cartilage:
• has a high proportion of amorphous matrix
• it covers the articular surface of synovial joints
• plays a role in growth in length of long bone epiphyseal plate
• the skeleton of a fetus is made largely of hyaline cartilage
Elastic cartilage:
• composed of a large amount of elastic fibers
• very flexible
• repairs itself with fibrous tissue when damaged
Fibrocartilage:
Has many collagen fibers embedded in a small amount of matrix
Where is Elastic cartilage found?
Auricle of the ear
External acoustic (auditory) meatus
Auditory tube
Epiglottis
Where could Fibrocartilage be found?
In the discs within vertebral joints
Temporal-mandibular joints
Articular surface of the clavicle bone
Manubrium of sternum
