Why joint discs do not repair themselves when damaged?
Because they have a poor blood supply
It repairs itself slowly if it’s damaged
What cartilage ossify in later life?
Hyaline cartilage and Fibrocartilage ossify in later life
What is Osseous tissue?
Strong tissue that makes up bones
What does ossa mean?
Ossa = bone
Why is bone a hard connective tissue?
Because of the calcification of its extracellular matrix and organic fibers
What does bone matrix contains?
It contains organic and inorganic portion
Where is bone cells located?
Bone cells (osteocytes) are located within holes in the matrix, which are called lacunae
What are the organic components of the bone?
Cells
Fibers
& ground substance
What are the inorganic components of bone?
Mineral salts that invade the bone matrix, making bone tissue hard
What are the two types of skeleton?
- peripheral / appendicular skeleton
- axial skeleton
