ozymandias Flashcards
who wrote ozymandias
Percy shelly
“i met a traveler from an antique land”
- Shelly is writing about and 1818 dictator napoleon however he doesn’t want to seem unpatriotic so he distanced himself
- he is against the political ruling class in Britain as he’s scared wellington may become a dictator
“a wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command”
-referencing to napoleon the wrinkle shows he was already old and his power was already slipping away
alliteration emphasises the cold command
“sneer” shows how rulers have to sympathy and that england needs a more democratic system
“The hand that mocked them and the heart that Fed”
- describes the statue the artist has survived the mighty ozymandias
- the volta
- feeding the people nothing as he has no emotion
- sculptor is mocking him
“look on my works ye mighty and despair”
look is imperative
“my works” celebrating the artist not him
should despair as he is no longer mighty like the artist
ironic as now nothing remains
“of that colossal wreck”
-at first glance a metaphor for his ego
an allusion to colossus that readers would have understood that mighty power gets destroyed
-shelly hopes his art will live on
