Ozempic Flashcards
Key points
Co-morbidities = diseases that hang with each other.
Exercise is medicine because we can reduce weight with exercise and with medicine, but it is hard to do and not common.
Bariatric surgery is invasive and risky.
Prescriptions have increased.
Wegovy can be prescribed for weight management.
Know side effects associated with semaglutides.
Bariatric Surgery
Put band around the stomach to shrink the volume of it.
Bypass = bypass esophagus right to small intestine to decrease how much you consume at a time.
Sleeve gastrectomy = put a sleeve around the stomach and squeeze it so it can’t be as big.
GLP-1 Mechanism of Action
GLP-1 released in intestine…
-increases satiety signal
-increase insulin and decrease glucagon
-decrease gastric emptying (slows it down)
Short lived in humans because it is metabolized quickly by the body
What does Ozempic do?
Semaglutide mimics GLP-1:
-amplified and sustained hormonal response
-metabolized less quickly than natural GLP-1
-allows for 1 shot per week
Semaglutide vs Placebo Results
Increase insulin and suppresses glucagon.
Delays gastric emptying (decrease glycemic load).
Decrease appetite and fewer cravings.
Weight loss targeted fat and not lean mass.
Reduced LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.
Cost
