Malnutrition Flashcards
Malnutrition
Condition associated with over and under nutrition.
1.9 billion obese (overnourished) and 881 million undernourished = about 2.7 billion.
33% of the population is either over or undernourished.
462 million people are underweight.
Overnutrition
Dietary imbalance of macronutrients (too much energy).
Overweight children is often due to parents overfeeding them or feeding them the right food.
Adult rates are 50 times that of children.
Undernutrition
Diet that lacks energy or specific essential nutrients.
1 in 11 people around the world are undernourished.
In children leads to stunting, in adults reduced life quality and expectancy.
Nutrient Deficiency: Iron
Essential component of hemoglobin and myoglobin.
Necessary for growth and normal cellular functioning.
Globally 33% of women of reproductive age and 42% of children 6-9 months are anemic.
Some sources of iron…
Fish, red meat, etc.
What is the double burden of nutrition?
Two scenarios happening alongside each other.
The coexistence of overnutrition (overweight and obesity) alongside undernutrition (stunting and wasting).
Stunting
Low height for age (largely irreversible).
Wasting
Low weight for height.
