Nutrition Discipline and Evidence Based Practice Flashcards
Kinesiology
The study of the art and science of human movement.
Is a field with many academic disciplines and professions.
Multi-disciplinary, young, dynamic, and applied.
Academic Discipline
Societies with bodies of knowledge printed in academic journals.
Field of Kinesiology’s discipline (includes anatomy, physiology, motor control) informs profession (and vice versa).
Field of Nutrition’s discipline (includes biochemistry, physiology, psychology) informs profession (and vice versa).
Nutrition
The study of foods, their nutrients, and other chemical components, their actions and interactions in the body, and their influence on health and disease.
Nutrition science (discipline) and the profession (dietetics) is multidisciplinary, young, and dynamic.
Evidence-Based Professionals
Use the knowledge from the discipline, practical experience/expertise and client factors to inform practice.
Limiting definition = use the knowledge from their discipline to inform practice.
Evidence-Based Practice
A process for integrating scientific and practical knowledge to best serve the needs of the client.
Combines clinical expertise, patient factors, and best available evidence.
Quackery
A method of advertising or selling that uses false claims to lure people into buying products that worthless or even harmful.
Five Steps of Evidence-Based Practice
1) Ask a question
2) Find best evidence
3) Evaluate evidence
4) Apply information in combination with clinical experiences and patient values
5) Evaluate outcomes
Nutrients
Six classes of nutrients.
Includes macronutrients (CHO, fat, protein, water) and micronutrients (vitamins, minerals such as iron).
What is energy?
The capacity to do work.
Measured by bomb calorimeter.
Kilocalories (kcal) or calorie (cals) measures energy
Calorie (cal)
Unit if measurement used to quantify the amount of energy in food that can be supplied to the body.
Energy in Macronutrients
Fats provide 9 cal/g
CHO provide 4 cal/g
Proteins provide 4 cal/g
H2O provide 0 cal/g
Alcohol provide 7 cal/g
