OZ6 Bond Polarity Flashcards
When is a covalent bond non-polar?
When 2 atoms in a covalent bond have equal electronegativities.
When is a covalent bond polar?
When 2 atoms in a covalent bond have different electronegativities.
What happens to bonding electrons in a nonpolar bond?
They are shared equally between the 2 atoms.
What happens to bonding electrons in a polar bond?
They are drawn to the more electronegative atom and therefore distributed unevenly.
What atom is delta negative in a polar covalent bond and why?
The more electronegative atom, as more electrons are drawn to it.
What atom is delta positive in a polar covalent bond and why?
The less electronegative atom, as less electrons are drawn to it.
What makes a bond more polar?
A greater difference in electronegativity.
What is dipole moment?
A measure of how polar a bond is.
How is the direction of dipole shown?
By an arrow with a line across it.
What do we have to consider to determine if a molecule with over two atoms is polar?
The polarity of each bond, and how the bonds are arranged in the molecule.
What can nonpolar molecules have and why?
Polar bonds, as they may cancel each other out.
What direction does the arrow that measures dipole moment point?
To the partially negative charged end.
