Oxygen Therapy Flashcards
Nasal cannula
Most used to administer oxygen
Delivers concentration of 22% to50% w/ flow rate of 1 to 6 L/ ml
Used for pts who are non critical w/ minor breathing problem who cant or will not wear a mask. It administer low- flow oxygen humidification is rarely
Simple mask
FIO2 35% to 65%
This device requires fairly high Oxygen flow to prevent rebreathing of carbon dioxide.
Don’t use a flow rate lower than 6 L/ ml with this type of mask ( CO2 can build up in the mask at low rates)
Consider humidification to keep theta mucous membranes from becoming dry.
Nonrebreather face mask
Used to deliver high flow rates and high concentrations of oxygen
Do not allow the reservoir bag to deflate, if deflate the patient is likely to breathe in large amount of exhale carbon dioxide
Venturi mask
It is used for pts who have COPD when an accurate F iO2 is essential and carbon dioxide build up must be keep at a minimum. Humidifiers are not used with this device. Most used for critical ill patients
Manual resuscitation bag
Provides high concentration of oxygen to a pt prior to a procedure such as suctioning or intubating and during respiratory or cardiac arrest
Early stage of hypoxia
Restless, confused, anxiety, elevated high blood pressure, increase heart rate, increase respiratory rate, and dyspnea
Late sign of hypoxia
Decrease level of consciousness, decrease activity level, hypotension, bradycardia, metabolic acidosis, and cyanosis
Chronic hypoxia
Clubbing or fingers and toes, peripheral edema, right-side heart failure, respiratory acidosis, oxygen saturation 87%
Face tent mask
Pts who have trouble breathing of fee lack to air
Humidifier is a must in order to maintain the mucous membrane close
Tracheostomy collar
A tracheostomy collar is designed to provide high humidity and the oxygen concentration prescribe.
Flow meter
Turn the knob all the way to the left provides maximal oxygen flow.
Turning the knob all the way to the right stops the flow of oxygen from the cylinder to the patient.
Preparing to insert a straight urinary catheter for a male patient what should the nurse do
Apply light traction to the penis.
It position the penis to a perpendicular to the body while light traction straightens the urethral canal to facilitate the catheter insertion
