Oxygen analyzers and pulse oxymetry Flashcards
Oxygen Analyzers
monitors O2 concentrations delivered to patients
oxygen analyzers rely on what?
Electrochemical interactions
2 types of oxygen analyzers
Galvanic Fuel cell and Polargraphic fuel cells
Galvanic fuel cell
O2 passes through the teflon membrane–> O2 + H2O makes OH- in the negative electrode–> OH- travels to (+) electrode–> OH- is oxidized –> generates an electrical curent that is measured is proportional to partial pressure of O2 not %
Polargraphic fuel cell
Relies on the same process as galvanic fuel cells but the electrical current is proportional to partial pressure and displayed as O2%
Pulse oxymetry
a non- invasive means to measure O2 saturation of Hb and HR
Pulse oxymetry uses what principle
spectrophotometry
How is pulse measured?
periodic measurement of absorbance during systole and diastole. Less transmittance during systole bc of inc blood flow while there’s and increased transmittance during diastole
Pulse oxymeter limimtations
- room lighting
- nail polish or intravascular dyes
- Perfusion
- diminished accuracy below 80%
- can’t detect hypoxemia
- dysHb
- pressence of carboxyHb and metHb
- pigmented skin
- motion
