Oxygen Flashcards
What is type 1 respiratory failure?
Patient is short of O2
What is type 2 respiratory failure?
Patient is short of o2, and has too much CO2
What is P02? How is it measured?
PaO2 describes the amount of oxygen dissolved in arterial blood plasma. The measurement is given as a pressure value mmHg or kpa.
What is Fi02?
FiO2 stands for Fraction of Inspired Oxygen; it is a fraction of the amount of oxygen a patient is inhaling produced by an oxygen device such as a nasal cannula or mask. Different devices deliver different amounts of oxygen to the patient
What is the relationship between SpO2 and PO2?
There is a relationship between Sp02 and Pa02, which is described in the oxyhemoglobin dissociation curve.
The amount of oxygen dissolved in the blood is proportional to the partial pressure of oxygen. The amount of oxygen bound to hemoglobin will increase as the partial pressure of oxygen increases.
Target oxygen levels for someone on oxygen
94-98% never make their oxygen levels 100%
What will giving someone too much oxygen that does not need it do (getting their saO2 to 100%) ?
Their pO2 will fall and lead to gross deterioration in oxygenation
What makes patients retain CO2?
V/Q mismatching (ventilation is good but perfusion is not)
True/false, patients with chronically poor localised ventilation can be oxygen sensitive (V/Q mismatch)
True
Different types of hypoxia
- Circulatory hypoxia
- Anaemic hypoxia
- Toxic hypoxia
- Hypoxaemic hypoxia
Shunting
Perfusion without ventilation
Dead space
Ventilation without perfusion
