Oxygen Flashcards
1
Q
What gases are in the air?
A
Nitrogen, oxygen, inert gases and carbon dioxide
2
Q
How much nitrogen is in the air?
A
78%
3
Q
How much oxygen is in the air?
A
21%
4
Q
How much inert gases and carbon dioxide are in the air?
A
1%
5
Q
Hydrogen peroxide –> ?
A
Oxygen +water
6
Q
What is a catalyst?
A
A substance that changes the speed of the chemical reaction but is not used in the reaction itself.
7
Q
List three uses of oxygen
A
- Breathing, used for patients + revive people who have been rescued from burning buildings + mountain climbers use it .
- Burning and welding, acetone (ethyne) burns much more fiercely in oxygen 3,000 oC.
- Space Rocket, no oxygen in outer space so rockets needs to carry it
8
Q
What are the physical properties of oxygen?
A
- Colourless, odourless, tasteless gas.
- Slightly soluble in water.
- Slightly heavier than air.
9
Q
What are the chemical properties of oxygen?
A
- Supports combustion (can burn in air but more vigorously in oxygen)
- Reacts with most elements to form oxides.
- No effect on litmus
