Digestive System Flashcards
What is digestion?
The breakdown of large insoluble molecules into smaller soluble molecules
What are enzymes?
Biological catalysts
What is the substance on which the enzyme acts called?
The substrate
What is the result of the reaction called?
The product
What are the stages in nutrition?
Eating, digestion, absorption, getting rid of undigested wastes
Define eating?
Food is taken into the mouth
Define absorption
The digested food is absorbed into the blood stream and is carried to the cells where it is used.
What are the parts to the digestive system?
Mouth, Oesophagus, salivary glands, liver, stomach, pancreas, large intestine, small intestine, appendix, rectum, anus
What is the function of the mouth?
Where food is chewed and mixed with saliva.
What is the function of the Oesophagus?
Food is carried from the mouth to the stomach by muscular action
What is the function of the salivary gland?
Produces saliva containing enzymes
What is the function of the liver?
Produces bile which aids the digestion of fats. It sorts and stores some digested food
What is the function of the stomach?
Produces digestive juices. Food and digestive juices are mixed.
Hydrochloric acid kills bacteria and other germs.
What is the function of the pancreas?
Produces insulin and digestive enzymes
What is the function of the large intestine?
Takes water back into the bloodstream, leaving solid waste
