Chemical Bonding Flashcards
Define Molecule.
A group of atoms joined together. It is the smallest particle of an element or compound that can exist independently.
Describe a covalent bond?
A bond that consists of shared electrons.
Define the octet rule.
When bonding occurs, atoms try to have eight electrons in their outer shell
List the three properties of covalent compounds?
- Low melting and boiling points.
- Usually liquid or gas at room temperature.
- Does not conduct electricity.
List three properties of ionic compounds?
- Usually solid at room temperature.
- High melting/boiling points.
- Usually soluble in water.
Define ‘single bond’
A single bond is formed when one pair of electrons is shared.
Define double bond
When two pairs of electrons are shared.
Define ‘ion’
An ion is a charged atom or group of atoms
Define an ionic bond
The force of attraction between positive and negative ions in a compound
What type of bonding is in the molecule of sodium chloride?
Ionic bonding
