Oxygen Flashcards
Indications
“Clary Actually Caught 6 Sharks Diving”
Condition requiring sedation to be administered Airway obstruction Cluster headaches Severe shock Spo2 less than 94% Severe TBI Smoke inhalation Suspected CO poisoning Severe respiratory distress Decompression illness
Cautions
Morbidly Obese, neonate, COPD, CO2 retainer, on home oxygen, on home CPAP or BiPAP, administered in confined space.
Complications
When oxygen is not indicated it increases level of oxygen in the blood to the degree that results in vasoconstriction and and increases inflammation.
Flow rates
Nasal prongs: 1-4 Simple: 6-8 Neb: 8 Reservoir: 10-15 MBM: 10-15
Delivery device
Simplest one and at lowest FR possible to achieve SpO2 of 94-97%
NP/ SM: most pt
Severe hypoxia or carbon monoxide poisoning: reservoir
Peep/ assisting with RR: MBM
COPD and oxygen
Titrate to pt normal oxygen salts
If not known between 88-92%
Use medical air as driver for nebuliser medication
If pt requires supplemental oxygen use nasal prongs
If medical not available use oxygen for driver with neb on for 5 and off for 5.
Monitor for signs of decreased respiratory drive and hypercarbia
