Oxidation and Reduction Flashcards
Distinguish between oxidation and reduction.
OILRIG
Oxidation is the loss of electrons, reduction is the gain of electrons.
Do oxidation and reduction happen together.
Yes are you dumb
True or false
Atoms in the elemental state have an oxidation number of 0
True
True or false
In simple ions the oxidation number is the same as the charge on the ion
True
Ex: Mg2+ —- +2
O2- ——— - 2
The higher the oxidation number..
The more oxidized it has become (the more electrons lost etc etc etc)
IN A VOLTAIC CELL: What is the cathode?
Where reduction occurs, it is positive
IN A VOLTAIC CELL: What is the anode?
Where oxidation occurs, it is negative
Why is a salt bridge essential?
enables a negative charge to be carried in the opposite direction to that of the electrons. The ion movement neutralizes any build up of charge and maintains the potential difference.
How do you make a non-spontaneous reaction spontaneous.
Electrolytic cell what up.
IN AN ELECTROLYTIC CELL
What happens in the Cathode and the anode?
Cathode: Cations gain electrons aka they reduced
Anode: Anions lose electrons aka they are oxideized
