Oxidation and Reduction Flashcards
OIL RIG
Oxidation is loss, reduction is gain (of electrons)
what is an oxidising agent?
causes something to be oxidised, it does this by gaining electrons itself - so it gets reduced
an oxidising agent is an electron acceptor
what is a reducing agent?
causes something to get reduced, it does this by losing electrons itself - so it gets oxidised
a reducing agent is an electron donor
what happens when a more reactive halogen reacts with a less reactive halide?
a more reactive halogen oxidises the ions of a less reactive one
what’s the trend for reactivity down group 7?
less reactive, less powerful oxidising agent
why do halogens dissolve better in non-polar solvents like liquid hydrocarbons than they do in water?
the halogens are also non-polar molecules
what happens when the halogen reaction mixture is shaken with a non-polar solvent?
the halogen is extracted and a deeper colour is given
