Own Experement non participant Flashcards
state operationalised alternative hypothesis
There will be a difference in the number of times males and females hold their phone, text on their phone or scroll on their phone.
explain reason for directional/non-directional hypothesis
It is hard to decide before the observation occurs if, for example, more people will scroll or text on their phone than hold the phone.
state appropriate null hypothesis
There will be no difference in the amount of times male and females scroll or text on their phones, compared to the amount of times a phone is held.
how mobile phone use is operationalised in this observation
Holding the phone, scrolling and texting.
what sampling method was used?
Opportunity
Identify the main characteristics of your sample group
16 participants, three male, 13 female. all students. all in Starbucks
Why was opportunity sample used (two advantages)
practical. don’t need a lot of time or money spent to gather participants, or for observation to take place & Guarantees sufficient amount of participants as all in school.
Weaknesses of OP sample
not representative, conclusions entire population cannot be drawn & prone to researcher bias, researcher may ignore friend’s phone usage
independent groups
only one group and condition.
why this methodology is was chosen
covert: more accurate - removes social desirability bias.
non-participant: not actively involved less risk of distraction & forgetting results.
structured: data is more valid. removes the risk of missing data out, like with qualitative data.
observation methodology type
structured, covert, non-participant observation.
What central dendancy was used and why
mode as cannot calculate mean, median or range as data is discontinuous and in categories.
How was it recorded
Tally chart and bar chart
identify appropriate inferential statistic
Chi square test - Nominal data, Testing a difference between male and female data & Male and female data is not related, it’s two separate categories
