Overview of the CNS Flashcards
What are the 2 anatomical parts of the nervous system?
Central (CNS)
Peripheral (PNS)
What is the main component of the CNS?
The spinal cord
What are the components of the brainstem?
Midbrain
Pons
Medulla oblongata
What is the function of neurons?
Recieve information via synapses and transmit electrical impulses to other cells
What are the function of glial cells?
Glue like
Hold the brain together as there is no connective tissue in the brain
What are some types of glial cells?
Astrocytes
Oligodendrocytes
Microglia
Ependymal cells
What is the function of astrocytes?
Maintaining the blood brain barrier
Environmental homeostasis
What is the function of oligodendrocytes?
Produce myelin in the CNS
What is the function of microglia?
Immune surveillance and antigen presentation
What do ependymal cells line?
The ventricles
What matter is found on the outside of the brain?
Grey matter
Are neuron cell bodies found in the white matter?
No
Its only axons and support cells
In the spinal cord which matter is found on the outside?
White matter
What pattern is grey matter found in the spinal cord?
‘H’ pattern
What are some important features of the brain?
Precentral gyrus Central sulcus Postcentral gyrus Lateral fissure Longitudinal fissure Pareito-occipital sulcus Cingulate sulcus Cingulate gyrus Calcarine sulcus Corpus callosum Ventricles
