Overview of Immune system Flashcards
1
Q
What does pathogenicity mean?
A
The abitility of a microorganism to induce a disease.
2
Q
What is an antigen?
A
A molecule that is recognised by the immune system
3
Q
What is an antibody?
A
A glycoprotein molecule also called immunoglobulin
4
Q
What is the role of the immune system?
A
- defence againt infections
- to respond to tissue grafts and newly introduced proteins
- defence against tumors
- antibodies are specific reagents for detecting any class of molecules
5
Q
What are some implications of the immune system?
A
- defincients immunity can result in infections e.g. AIDS
- immune responses are a barrier for transplants and gene therapy
- potential for immunotherapy of cancer
- immunological approaches for lab testing are widely used in clinical medicine and research
6
Q
What are the 2 types of immune systems?
A
- innate immune system
- adaptive immune system
7
Q
What is the function of the innate IS?
A
- its older, was the first one developed in our bodies
- it is very fast can act as soon as its infected
- we are born with it its unspecific and work the same in everyone
8
Q
What cells are in the innate IS?
A
Myeloid cells
- neutrophils
- eosinophils
- macrophage
- basophiles
- monocytes , lymphocytes: NK cells
9
Q
What is the function of the adaptive IS?
A
- younger IS
- more specific with fighting off pathogens takes longer
- acquired immunity very specifc to an indivudual
10
Q
What cells are involved in adaptive IS?
A
- B-cells
- T-Cells, CD4 T helper, CD8 cytotoxic
