Overview Of Circulation Flashcards
What are platelets formed from?
Macrokaryocytes
What pH is the blood kept at?
~7.4
If it drops below 6.8 or goes above 8.0, the cells will die
How does acidosis kill cells?
It denatures metabolic enzymes and ion channels
-Decreased CNS function can lead to coma or death
How does alkalosis lead to cell death?
- The neurons become hyper excitable, which leads to tingling, fasciculation, paralysis of respiratory muscles
Most myocardial perfusion occurs during what?
Heart relaxation (diastole)
Which type of vessel contains the most elastic fibers? Why is this beneficial?
Arteries contain the most elastic fibers and this is beneficial because it allowed for distention and recoil
Which vessel contains the most collagen? Why is this beneficial?
Veins have the most collagen. It gives structural support
Where does the largest drop is pressure occurs in vessels?
The arterioles because they do not have elastic fibers
Is pulmonary or systemic pressure higher?
Systemic.
Pulmonary does not have to high because the lungs are close and the blood does not have to travel as far.
What is velocity of flow inversely relegated to?
Total cross sectional area
What are conduit vessels?
Arteries
What are exchange vessels?
Capillaries
What are capacitance vessels?
Veins
What side of the heart is the tricuspid valve on?
The right
What side of the heart is the mitral valve on?
The left
Why is perfusion not significant during contraction?
Compression of the coronary vessels
What are the primary resistance vessels?
Arterioles
What is blood flow?
The volume of blood flowing through a structure per unit of time
What does resistance refer to?
Opposition of blood flow through a vessel
Which vessels have the lowest pressure?
Veins
What vessel does the largest pressure drop occur in?
Arterioles
Does the pulmonary or systemic circuit have higher pressure? Why?
The systemic has higher pressure because the blood has farther to travel. In the pulmonary circuit, the blood only needs to go to the lungs
What affects the velocity of blood flow?
The area of the vessels
Where is the velocity of flow the slowest?
The capillaries, they have the largest cross sectional area
Are alpha 1 receptors responsible for vasoconstriction of vasodilation?
Vasoconstriction
Are Beta 2 receptors responsible for vasoconstriction of vasodilation?
Vasodilation
Does blood travel through multiple capillary beds or organs during a single trip around the body?
No. Complex organization allows everything to get its own blood supply
