Syndrome involving defined alterations in cognition, mood, perception, and/or behavior
- Significant distress and/or functional impairment
- Characteristic course
- Not better accounted for by a known general medical condition
- Symptoms lie well outside the culturally recognized expression

Greater consistancy of dx
Better for conducting studies
Disadvantages of DSM
Doesn’t consider etiology
Doesn’t reflect what you see in practice
Multiaxial Diagnosis
Axis I: Psych disorders other than personality (mood, psychotic, anxiety, substance use…)
Axis II: Personality DOs and mental retardation
Axis III: Relevant medical conditions
Axis IV: Psychosocial and environmental stressors
