overtaking/merging Flashcards
position when overtaking
overtake from the LEFT
NOT leftmost (unnecessary)
When are you not allowed to overtake
NOT:
- before a junction
- before a bend
- before pedestrian crossing
- in bad weather
- while merging
- when there is a solid line
- overtaking sign ban
condition requirements to overtake
- speed difference
- far enough apart (i.e in 2 separate lanes)
- indicate
Driving past someone
this is still considered overtaking
(if those in the lane left of you are too slow and you are going fast and about to pass them you MUST slow down, change lane and overtake them from the LEFT)
e.g truck in lane 2 (max. 90km), you in lane 3 (max.130) you CANNOT drove past them (that would be overtaking from the right)
Motorways with 3 lanes or more: who can be in lane 1
Lane 1 cant have ANY trucks nor trailers longer than 7m
When is it permitted to overtake from the right
- in traffic jam
- deceleration/acceleration lane
- roundabouts
- trams
- someone turns left on the junction
acceleration lane: merging process
1) speed up
2) look for gap
3) indicate + merge (must be when you are right next to the main carriageway)
How much before do you indicate before taking an exit
300m
deceleration lane
only switch off indicator once you pass the last marking block
only slow down in deceleration lane, NOT when you are still in carriageway
once you are in the exit lane you CANNOT go back onto the main carriageway
merging in traffic
if you cannot merge do NOT indicate in advance
let cars pass/overtake, now when you can merge, indicate
Approaching a traffic jam
turn hazard lights on and break in time
to maintain flow of traffic:
stay in your lane + stick to it
maintain constant speed
when cars infront indicate expect them to break and slow down
