Ovarian cycle Flashcards
Ovarian cycle
A series of events that has to do with the maturation and release of an ovum
What are the 3 phases of the ovarian cycle?
- The follicular phase
2.ovulation
3.luteal phase
Follicular phase
-lasts 10-14 days
-consists of the rapid growth of a follicle
Ovulation
-happens on DAY 14
-when the ovum is released by ovary
Luteal phase
-happens days 15 to 26
-has 2 phases
What happens in the luteal phase if fertilization and implantation DOES occur?
-corpus luteum maintained and produces estrogen and progesterone until placenta takes over
-estrogen and progesterone secretion prevents the loss of stratum functionalis
-placenta takes over hormone producing function of the corpus luteum
When will the corpus luteum degenerate? (assuming fertilization and implantation occured)
once placenta begins hormone secretion
what happens during the luteal phase if implanation does NOT occur?
-corpus luteum degenerate which results in less estrogen and progesterone prodcution
-less estrogen and progesterone secretion results in the breakdown of stratum functionalis
how long does an egg have to be fertilized and implanted?
12-24 hours
