Outline 15 - Muscles of the face Flashcards
what are 3 elevator muscles of mastication (chewing)?
a. temporalis
b. masseter
c. medial pterygoid
temporalis is ___ shaped
fan
what is the strongest/biggest muscle for chewing ?
masseter
what is the most most important muscle for speech ?
medial pterygoid
what are the 4 depressor muscles of mastication ? (think: “LAGMA”)
a. Lateral pterygoid
b. Geniohyoid
c. Mylohyoid
d. Anterior belly of digastrics
what are the muscles for Rounding/Pursing/Puckering (lips)?
- Orbicularis oris
- Incisivus labii superior
- Incisivus labii inferior
what are the muscles for retraction/smiling ?
- buccinator
2. risorius
what are the muscles for Elevation/Smiling?
- Quadratus labii superior (3 parts)
a. Levator labii superior (angular)
b. Levator labii alaeque nasi (infraorbital)
c. Zygomatic minor - Canine (levator anguli oris)
- Zygomatic major (sygomatic)
what are the muscles for Depression/Frowning?
- Triangularis (depressor anguli oris)
- Quadratus labii inferior (depressor labii inferior)
- Mentalis (chin muscle)
- Platysma
what are the muscles of the Forehead ?
i. Occipital Frontalis
ii. Procerus muscle (Pyramidalis nasi)
what are the muscles for the Eyes?
i. Orbicularis occuli “Orbicularis Palpebrarum”
- Palpebral portion
- Orbital portion
what are the muscles for the Ear?
i. Anterior auricularis
ii. Superior auricularis
iii. Posterior auricularis
Hair (posterior head)
Occipital frontalis
what kind of joint is laterization?
condyloid joint motion to grind food (up, down, left, and right)
orbicularis oris
tight lips for eating, puckering,
Incisivus labii superior (levator)
raising of corners of mouth
Incisivus labii inferior (depressor)
draws corners of mouth down
Palpebral portion of orbicularis palpebrum
closes eyelid (blinking)
Orbital portion of orbicularis palpebrum function
closes eyelid (squeezes/tight)
- covers the whole top of your head from the occiput (bump on the back of your head) - draws scalp backward - wrinkle forehand - raises eyebrow/nose - up/down contraction
what forehead muscle is this?
occipital frontalis (forehead)
procerus muscle (pyramidalis nasi) (forehead)
- mixes with occipital
- draws eyebrows closer together
Pulls the condyloid forward to drop the jaw. It has two heads; the Superior head and Inferior head.
what depressor is this?
Lateral pterygoid
: muscle of cheek retraction. Closes the buccal cavity. Draws corners of the mouth laterally and posteriorly. Pulls lips backwards. Also sucks in lips against teeth.
what Retraction/Smiling muscle is this?
Buccinator
posterior part draws the scalp backwards making your hair move.
what muscle is this?
Occipital frontalis
