Q

Didang Tang

In Taiyang disease that has lasted six to seven days, the surface pattern is still present, the pulse is faint and deep, but there is no chest bind, and the person is as if mad, for this is heat in the lower burner, and there must be hard fullness in the lower abdomen, for the person whose urination is smooth, there must be downpour of blood which indicates curation. Why is this, for taiyang follows the channel, and stasis heat is in the interior, so Didang Tang governs. (SHL 124)

In Taiyang disease, when the body is yellow, pulse is deep and knotted, the lower abdomen is hard, and urination is unsmooth, this indicates that there is no blood; when urination is smooth, and the person is as if mad, this is truly a blood pattern, and Didang Tang governs. (SHL 125)

When in Yangming disease the person is forgetful, there will be blood amassment. Why this is so is because originally there was enduring blood amassment, thus causing forgetfulness and stool, that although hard, is nevertheless easy to pass, and that will be black in color. It is appropriate to precipitate with Didang Tang. (SHL 237)

After sweat promotion, the pulse is floating and rapid, and there is vexing thirst, Wuling San governs. (SHL72)

In Wind Strike with fever, which after six or seven days does not resolve and is accompanied by vexation, then there is an exterior-interior pattern, for there is thirst with desire to drink, but when water enters the mouth, there is vomiting, for this is called

When in cold damage, there is a faint pulse and reversal, and at seven or eight days, the skin is cold, and the person does not even have temporary periods of peace, this indicates visceral reversal, not roundworm reversal. In roundworm reversal, the person should vomit roundworms. Now the person is still, and then has periodic vexation, which indicates visceral cold. Roundworms ascend and enter one’s diaphragm, so there is vexation, but wait a moment and it will stop. After receiving food, there is retching and
again vexation, because the roundworms smell the malodor of food, and the person often spontaneously vomits roundworms. For roundworm reversal, Wumei Wan governs. It also governs longstanding diarrhea. (SHL338)

Q

Xiao Chaihu Tang
In Cold Damage of five or six days, there is wind strike, coming and going of hot and cold, uncomfortable fullness of chest and ribs, muted lack of desire for drink and food, mental vexation and desire to vomit, possibly thirst, possibly pain in the abdomen,
possibly hard glomus under the ribs, possibly pulsations under the heart, or lack of thirst, mild fever all over the body, or with coughing, Xiao Chaihu Tang governs. (SHL96)

For all yellowing, with abdominal pain and vomiting, Chaihu Tang is indicated. (JG15)

For vomiting with fever, Xiao Chaihu Tang governs. (JG17)

In muddled oppression of a newly delivered woman, the pulse is faint and weak, with inability to eat, and adversely stool is hard, there is only sweating on the head, why is that, [because there is] blood deficiency and reversal, for reversal imperatively shows muddled oppression. When oppression patients are about to resolve, there imperatively is great sweat excretion. In blood deficiency there is reversal from below, with orphan yang exiting upwards, and so there is sweating on the head. And so it is that newly-delivered women have a tendency to sweating, because of death of yin and deficiency of blood, with yang qi being abundant by itself, and so after the sweating, yin yang return [to balance]. For hardness of stool, and vomiting with inability to eat, Xiao Chaihu Tang governs. (JG21)

When after seven or eight days of wind strike in women, there is alternation between chills and fever, occurring with periodicity, and interruption of the menstrual flow, this is heat entering the blood chamber. The blood must therefore congeal, and so cause this malaria-like presentation, occurring with periodicity, for Xiao Chaihu Tang governs. (JG22)

When in Taiyang and Yangming combined disease there is panting and fullness in the chest, one cannot use precipitation, but instead Mahuang Tang is appropriate. (SHL 36)

When in Tiayang disease, after ten days have passed, the pulse is floating and fine, and there is somnolence, the outer body has already resolved. If there is fullness in the chest and rib side pain, give Xiao Chaihu Tang, if the pulse if floating only, give Mahuang Tang. (SHL 37)

In Taiyang disease, there is a floating tight pulse, no sweating, fever, and body aches, which haven’t resolved in eight or nine days, then the surface pattern is still present and sweating should be promoted…. Mahuang Tang governs. (SHL 46)

When the pulse is floating, the disease is in the exterior, and if one can promote sweating, Mahuang Tang is appropriate. (SHL 51)

When the pulse is floating and rapid, if one can promote sweating, Mahuang Tang is appropriate. (SHL 52)

When in cold damage with pulse that is floating and tight, sweating is not promoted and this gives rise to spontaneous external bleeding, Mahuang Tang governs. (SHL 55)

When only the pulse is floating and no other signs are present, one can give Mahuang Tang. If there is no urination and there is abdominal fullness and hiccup, no treatment is possible. (SHL 232)
