outer ear Flashcards
Where is the hearing mechanism located
temporal bone
What is the function of the external ear
protect the delicate middle ear
provides gain for the high frequencies
provides cues for localization of sound sources
What is the input for the outer ear
sound from a loudspeaker at specified angles and a fixed distance (hanging from ceiling)
What is the output for the outer ear
the level of the sound from the loudspeaker at the person’s eardrum
What is an azimuth (examples)
horizontal direction expressed as the angular distance between a fixed point and the direction of an object
in front of person = 0°
behind person = 180°
What is 100 Hz wavelength equal to
basketball hoop
What is 1000 Hz wavelength equal to
length of your foot
What is 10,000 Hz wavelength equal to
half the length of your thumb
How does a spherical head impact directional pressure gains?
when sound is presented to it, it strikes it and then bounces off, and at high frequencies it can bounce off and add to the sound coming in
How does the ear canal impact directional pressure gains?
modeled as a one end closed tube with hard walls
measurements from ear canals show a resonance at 2.6 kHz
How does the concha impact directional pressure gains?
smaller cavity than the ear canal
resonant frequency is effected
Is the external ear linear?
Yes
if you measure its response to pure tones, you can predict its response to speech and other complex sounds
it doesn’t produce distortion
