Outcome 1 Notes: Disease Processes Flashcards
Microorganisms that normally grow in/on our bodies
Normal flora
Invasion by pathogen with adverse effects
Infection
Infection where a small area is affected
Local infection
Infection where the whole body is affected
Systemic infection
Single-celled organism found in plant, soil, polar ice and animals
- can be aerobic/anaerobic
- produces spores
Bacteria
Survive without oxygen
Anaerobic
Needs oxygen to survive
Aerobic
4 bacterial groups
- Bacilli
- Cocci
- Rickettsiae
- Spirilla
Rod shaped bacteria
Bacilli
- can cause diphtheria, TB, typhoid fever
Grape-like cluster shaped bacteria
Staphylococcus (Cocci)
Twisted chain shaped bacteria
Streptococcus (Cocci)
Very small bacteria which requires a host
Rickettsiae
Spiral shaped bacteria
Spirilla
Smallest of all known pathogens
- multiply within living cells
- not susceptible to antibiotics
Virus
Large group of simple plant-like organisms found in soil, water + air
- grows best in darkness
- few pathogenic
Fungi
- can cause histoplasmosis, coccidioidomycosis, ringworm, athlete’s foot, thrush
