Q

What characteristics must a planet have to be considered a planet?

A

The planet must only orbit the sun and have a nearly spherical shape. Also, the mass of a planet must be much larger than the total mass of all objects whose orbits are close by.

Q

What is mercury like?

A

It’s the smallest planet and is the closest to the sun. Mercury has no atmosphere because it’s too small so it can’t hold in the gases. Mercury has a lot of craters do to this.

Q

What is Venus like?

A

Venus is the second planet from the sun. It is 97% carbon dioxide. Venus has a longer day than year. Venus rotates from east to west. It’s the hottest planet in our solar system. It has a strong greenhouse effect.

Q

What is mars like?

A

Mars is the fourth planet from the sun & is half the size of earth. Mars’ atmosphere is 95% carbon dioxide & is less dense then earth. mars has a reddish color caused by iron oxide in the soil. Olympus Mons is the largest volcano known and is located on mars.

Q

What is Jupiter like?

A

Jupiter is largest planet in the solar system. It has at least 63 moons. The first four were discovered by Galileo and they are called Galalian moons. These moons are called lo, europa, Ganymede, and Castillo. They are all made of rock and ice.

16
Q

How does Jupiter have rings?

A

Within its atmosphere, it has dense and colorful clouds. since Jupiter spins so fast, the clouds stretch into colorful swirling bands.

17
Q

What is Saturn like?

A

Saturn is the sixth planet from the sun. It has rings and they were formed like jupiter’s rings. Saturn has seven rings. It has 60 moons.

18
Q

What is Uranus like?

A

Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun it has a system of narrow dark rings and a diameter of about four times that of earth. It has at least 27 moons.

19
Q

Why does Uranus have a tilt?

A

Uranus is tilted so when it revolves around the sun, it moves like a rolling ball. This might have been caused by a collision with an earthsized object.

20
Q

What is Neptune like?

A

Neptune is the last planet from the sun and 13 moons.

21
Q

What is a dwarf planet?

A

A object that orbits a star.

22
Q

What are some dwarf planets?

A

Eris, Pluto, makemake, ceres.

23
Q

What is a comets structure?

A

The solid inner part is it’s nucleus (also called a coma). As a comet moves closer to the sun, it heats and can develop a bright tail. Heating changes the ice in the comet into a gas.

24
Q

what’s the difference between a meteor, meteorite, and meteoroid?

A

A meteoroid is a small, rocky particle that moves through space, the meteor is the small streak of light in the meteoroid, and a meteorite is a meteoroid that hits a planet or moon.
