our solar system Flashcards
What are the four inner planets?
Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.
What characteristics must a planet have to be considered a planet?
The planet must only orbit the sun and have a nearly spherical shape. Also, the mass of a planet must be much larger than the total mass of all objects whose orbits are close by.
What are the four outer planets?
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
What are the inner planets made of?
Rocky materials.
What are the outer planets made of?
Ice and gases (hydrogen & helium)
What’s an astroid?
Millions of small rocky objects that orbit the sun in the astroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
What’s a comet?
Made of gas, dust, ice and moves around the sun in an oval shaped orbit.
What’s in the astronomical unit?
The average distance from Earth to the sun about 150,000,000 km.
What’s another name for the inner planets?
The terrestrial planets.
What is mercury like?
It’s the smallest planet and is the closest to the sun. Mercury has no atmosphere because it’s too small so it can’t hold in the gases. Mercury has a lot of craters do to this.
What’s the structure of all the inner planets?
They all have a core made of iron and nickel.
What is Venus like?
Venus is the second planet from the sun. It is 97% carbon dioxide. Venus has a longer day than year. Venus rotates from east to west. It’s the hottest planet in our solar system. It has a strong greenhouse effect.
What is the greenhouse effect?
When a planets atmosphere traps solar energy and causes the surface temperature to increase.
What is earth like?
Earth is the third planet from the sun. Unlike Mercury and Venus has a moon. Earth is the only planet to support human life and has liquid water.
What is mars like?
Mars is the fourth planet from the sun & is half the size of earth. Mars’ atmosphere is 95% carbon dioxide & is less dense then earth. mars has a reddish color caused by iron oxide in the soil. Olympus Mons is the largest volcano known and is located on mars.
