Q

How did the moon form?

A

An object the size of mars collided with earth. The impact ejected vaporized rock that formed a ring around earth. The material in the ring cooled and clumped together, forming the moon.

15
Q

What are highlands?

A

The light colored areas of the moon.

16
Q

How long is one rotation around the moon?

A

27.3 days.

17
Q

What is a solar eclipse?

A

When the suns shadow is on the moon.

18
Q

What is a lunar eclipse?

A

When the moon is in the earths shadow.

19
Q

What is the difference between partial and total?

A

Partial is when the shadow is in the penumbra and the total is when the shadow is in the umbra.

20
Q

Why don’t solar eclipses happen every month?

A

They can only occur during a new moon. The axis is titled slightly so everything doesn’t always end up in a straight line.

21
Q

Why don’t lunar eclipse occur every month?

A

Lunar eclipses can only occur during a full moon.

22
Q

What’s a tide?

A

The daily rise and fall of sea level.

23
Q

What causes earths tides?

A

The difference in the strength of the moons gravity on opposite sides of earth causes earths tides.

24
Q

What are spring tides?

A

They occur during full and new moon phases. Gravitational effects combine and produce higher high tides and lower low tides.

25
Q

What are neap tides?

A

The sun, earth, and moon from a right angle. High tides are lower and low tides are higher.
