Name the 3 sections of the ear
Outer, middle and inner
Name the parts of ear you can see with Otoscopy
Cone of light, EAM, ear canal, ear drum, umbo, malleus
What not to tell a patient about Otoscopy
Ask them if you could look in they ears, stay directive
Which ear do you look in first?
The none contaminated first to avoid cross contamination
Why would you need a parent to do a bear hug for their child
When the kid is none compliant
Why do we do Otoscopy?
examination of the EAC and →To check outer & middle ear abnormalities
Examples of outer ear abnormalities:
Microtia, anotia, macrotia
Examples of abnormal ear canal:
Scar tissue, tympanosclerosis, acute otitis media, • Wax plug • Dermatitis (excema) • Otitis externa (swimmers ear) • Otomycosis (fungus) • Presence of a foreign object (bugs)
Tympanic Membrane Abnormalities
- Perforation
- Drainage/Effusion
- Bleeding
- Infection
- Unknown growth
- PE tubes
What ages to screen?
7 months to 6 years
But if you can’t screen every child who do you screen?
Kids who have had otitis media before 6 months of age, bottle fed, eyebrow & eyelashes (different), craniofacial abnormalities
Which ethnic population has the higher incidence of otitis media (OM)?
Native Americans
Factors that increase OM?
Family history, weight loss/gain, smoking exposure
When NOT do to a hearing screening?
When they are monitored by a pediatrician or when there is a lot of wax.
When in doubt about anything you see you do what?
Refer to a health care professional
