OTOACOUSTIC EMISSIONS Flashcards
An Otoacoustic emission is a test of what?
Cochlear function
What is an Otoacoustic emission?
Produces a controlled acoustic signal in the ear canal and measures the resulting evoked emission that is generated by outer hair cells in the cochlea.
What is DPOAEs?
Distortion production OAE → test of auditory function for all ages
Frequencies 500hz-1000 hz
What is TEOAEs?
Transcient evoked OAE: abrupt click or burst activates the cochlea across a wide frequency region
How to perform the otoacoustic emission test?
- Great seal
- Can’t touch for a minute
- Really quiet environment
- Don’t wiggle or it will pick up muscles artifact
Who do we test with OAEs
- Neonatal hearing screening: prior to hospital discharge
- Hearing screenings: preschool
- Differential diagnosis: malingerers
- Monitoring cochlear damage: ototoxic medications
- Special needs
What are the variable influencing the outcomes of OAE testing?
- Middle ear state
- Noise in room
- Noise of subjects
- Debris in EAC
What can be the cause of a Fail in DPOAEs or TEOAEs?
- Middle ear infections
- Osteoroscloris
- Cochlear pathology disease
- Malformation
What OAEs are not?
Not a hearing rather a test of outer hair cell integrity
Auditory Neuropathy?
Child/parent will complain of abnormal hearing ability, but they will pass the OAE, but the ABR will be abnormal, but a hearing testing might be normal or show a mild loss, speech discrimination can be reduced
