What to look for: Ears
Inspect the auricle and surrounding tissue
Observing for Deformities, Lumps, Bumps, Skin lesions, Cauliflower ears, Tophi or Discharge
Ear Tug test:
Gently pull down on the ear lobe, or press
the tragus to see if it causes pain
Pain – Otitis Externa
No Pain – Otitis Media
Examining ear with Otoscope
Position the patients head so you can comfortably see
through the otoscope
Straighten the right ear canal using the fingers of your left
hand to grasp the auricle firmly but gently and pull it
upwards, backwards and slightly away from the head
- Insert the speculum gently into the ear canal,
directing it somewhat down and forward &
through any hairs. - Switch hands when examining the left ear- by
holding it with your left hand
Looking for at the canal
- Earwax (Cerumen)
- Inflammation (redness)
- Foreign Bodies
- Swelling Blood
Also looking at
*Tympanic membrance
*Cone of light
*Malleus
*Short Process of Malleus &
*Incus
At the tympanic membrane i am loking for
Colour
Shape
Light reflex
Perforation
Scaring
Anatomy of the ear
Pars flaccida
Incus
Pars tensa
Lateral process of malleus
Handle of malleus
Cone of light
