How does agomelatine work?
By mimicking the action of melatonin, agomelatine helps to re-synchronise the body’s circadian rhythms. These include not only sleep/wake cycles, but also mood, anxiety, appetite and body temperature. These circadian rhythms, particularly sleep cycles, are severely disturbed in people with depression. Agomelatine’s main action is to improve the onset and quality of sleep and this in turn has an antidepressant effect.
Agomelatine also helps to improve mood in depression by increasing noradrenaline and dopamine release in the brain.
What are the common side effects of agomelatine?
Abdominal pain, anxiety, back pain, constipation, diarrhoea, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, headaches, nausea, sleep disorders, vomiting, weight changes
How does mirtazapine work?
Mirtazapine blocks alpha-2 receptors that are found on nerve cells in the brain. Noradrenaline and serotonin would normally bind to these receptors. By blocking them, mirtazapine prevents noradrenaline and serotonin from becoming bound to the nerve cells. This enhances the mood-lightening effect of free noradrenaline and serotonin that is released from nerve cells, helping relieve depression.
What are the common side effects of mirtazapine?
Anxiety, appetite increased, arthralgia (joint pain), back pain, confusion, constipation, diarrhoea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, headache (on discontinuation), myalgia, nausea, oedema (excess of watery fluid collecting in the cavities or tissues of the body) postural hypotension (abnormally low blood pressure), sleep disorders, tremor, vomiting, weight increased
How does reboxetine work?
Reboxetine works by preventing noradrenaline from being reabsorbed back into the nerve cells in the brain. This helps prolong the mood lightening effect of any released noradrenaline. In this way, reboxetine helps relieve depression.
How does vortioxetine work?
Although it’s not fully understood, vortioxetine is thought to work by enhancing the activity of serotonin in the brain by blocking serotonin reuptake.
It also has activities on some of the serotonin receptors. The link between this information and therapeutic benefit is not known.
What are the common side effects of vortioxetine?
Abnormal dreams, constipation, diarrhoea, dizziness, nausea, skin reactions, vomiting
