Other terms midterm Flashcards
Protists
simple eukaryotic organisms that are neither plants nor animals or fungi (unicellular)
ex. algae, kelp, dinoflagellate
Saprotrophic Decomposers
organisms that break down dead and decaying organic matter, such as leaves, wood, and animal waste
bacteriophages
a type of virus that infects bacteria
Endospores
a resistant asexual spore that develops inside some bacteria cells
ex. Anthrax, Botox
Obligate Aerobes
unable to grow in absence of free oxygen
Facultative Aerobes
able to grow in presence or absence of free oxygen
Obligate anaerobes
unable to grow in presence of free oxygen (tetanus, botulism)
Aerotolerant anaerobes
do not use oxygen but are not poisoned by it
Photoautotrophs
Photosynthetic, some do not produce oxygen, some use solar energy to reduce CO2
Chemoautotrpohs
Chemosynthetic, reduces CO2 into organic compounds, oxidizes inorgannic compounds
Round bacteria
coccus
Rod bacteria
bacillus
Comma bacteria
vibrio
Rigid spiral bacteria
spirillus
flexible spiral bacteria
spirochete
salmonella outbreak
rod shaped
passed from infected feaces
abdominal cramps, fever
E coli. Outbreak
found in intestines of humans and animals
severe stomach cramps, bloody diarrhea and sometimes kidney faliure
sources: uncooked beef, raw fruit and veg
Kochs Postulates
test for if a particular organism causes a particular diseases (outdated)
1. microorganism must be found in abundance
2. microorganism must be from a diseased organism
3. cultured microorganism should cause disease when introduced to healthy organism
4. microorganisms must be re-isolated and identified
Psuedopods
temporary growth on cell used for movement and feeding (almost like a little foot)
