Hamartia
an error, frailty, mistaken judgement, or misstep through which the fortunes of the hero of a tragedy are reversed (Macbeth’s ambition)
- must express itself through a definite action or failure to act
Peripetia
a suddeb turn of events that directly or indirectly leads the tragic hero to their inevitable destruction (macbeth killing banquo - led to hallucinations)
Catharsis
when the emotions of pity and fear are combined to produce a profound sadness due to the impression of “wasted greatness”
Recognition
when the tragic hero recognizes his own shortcomings and comes to recognition of his own part in his destruction (“I won’t fight with you” to Macduff)
Poetic Retribution
inevitable revenge/retribution - punishment to fit the crime (Macbeth being killed)
Resolution
In macbeth: Great chain of being is restored
- audience feels pity because macbeth wasted his life by following his ambitions to extremes
