Other Minor Surgery/Procto Flashcards
An example of a simple wound includes
cuts, lacerations, punctures and blunt trauma
an example of complex wounds included
lacerations, avulsions, abrasions, cursh injuries, burns.
Clean wounds include
wonds with little bacteria and healing w/ no complication.
Dirty wounds include wonds that are older than
5 hours and are prone to infection.
tetanus is most commoin in wha5t age group?
50 and over
Simplest method of hemostasis
4x4 gauze
Polyglycolic acid
absorbalble, suture of choice for most physicians, able to resist infection, excellent knot security, difficult when wet. Primry application for depe closures.
Polyglycan-910
absorbable, not as good knot security as PGA, greatest tensile strength and wound strength, preferred for deep support for prolonged periods
Gut
absorbable, less tensilbe strengtha nd wound security compared to the synthetics. causes more tissue reaction.
Monofilament nylon
nonabs, mc for minor wounds and lacerations, good tensile strength and wound security, poor knot security
Polypropylene
STRONGEST, good wound security, poor knot security, resists infection, BEST for SUBCUTICULAR PULLOUT SUTURES.
Braided nonabsorbable types of material include
silk, cotton, braided nylon, and multifilament dacron.
bASAL cell carcinoma
most frequent, easily treatable, least life threatening, sun exposure, SLOW growth, Chiros prohibited from treating cancerous lesions.
squamous cell carcinoma
less common than basal, SUN EXPOSURE, REFERRAL for excision, upper lip, paranasal folds, ears, cheeks, axillary region.
Melanoma
most dangerous, least frequent, LETHAL, IMMEDIATE REFERRAL,
