Anesthetics Flashcards
3 improtant properties to consider when delivering anesthesia
onset of action, effectiveness, duration of anesthesia
Advantage of epinephrine 2
less anesthetic required b/c it stays at site longer and is less toxic. AND minimize the amount of bleeding d/t vasoconstrictive properties
Disadvantage of epinephrine
cant be sued in distal organs d/t vasoconstrivctive propereties
Direct infilitrations applications
anestehtic is introduced where entry has been created by trauma
Advantage of dierect inflitatrion
bypasses painful aspect of anesthesia
disadvantage of direct infiltration
wound has changed shape, inflammation process comprimises shape,
Field block
decreases risk of spreading infection with a contaminated wound; most freqeutn used type of anesthesia
Field block i
s used for sebaceous cystectomy, lipomectomy, excisions, and foreign body removal
nerve blocks
nerves anesthetiazed by infjecting directly around nerve
advantage of nerve blcok
produces anesthetic response for long period of time
most common type of nerve block is
digital or volar blcok
Procaine/Novocaine
Used for all types of anesthesia, 1% is used for minor surgery purposes.
Tetracaine/Pontocaine
potent, toxic, 10x more than procaine. used for spinal blocks, HAS NO USE IN CHIRO MINOR SURGERY
Lidocaine/xylocaine
Most popular anestehetic. AMIDE BASED, Onset is immediate.
Mepivicaine/carbocaine
amide based, used for LONG TIME FRAMES. NO EPINEPHRINE. IS SLIGHTLY VASOCONSTRICTIVE ALONE.
