other Materials Flashcards
Glass reinforced Plastics (GRP)
thermosetting plastic resin that is reinforced using very fine glass. in the form of matting or strips. hardener or a catalyst is added to it.
good strength to weight ratio, resistant to corrosion.
however is brittles and can shatter.
Medium density fibre board (MDF)
manufactured from wood chips, that are subjected to heat and pressure, wood is mixed with synthetic resins then heated and cooled to make wood.
prone to warping or splitting as has no grain.
furniture kitchen units, worktops.
Chipboard
wood particles are glued together and heated.
only look appealing when veneered or have a finish applied, as soon as mad contact with water becomes waterlogged and breaks down.
Laminates
bonding of two or more layers of material.
come in sheet forms.
needed to be finished by veneering or painting to look good.
only knockdown fittings are used.
flat pack furniture.
Plywood
manufactured from layers of veneers bonded together.
grain on each layer goes in different direction, to make it more stable.
does not warp or distort, however when wet layers can delaminate.
blockboard
made from strips of soft wood with veneer applied.
resistance to warping.
