Metals Flashcards
Ferrous metals
Metals that contain mainly ferrite or iron, they will rust and are magnetic
Non-Ferrous metals
metals that contain no iron such as aluminium tin and cooper, they do not rust and are not magnetic
Alloys Metal
formed by mixing two or more alloys, e.g stainless steel
Aluminium
Lightweight, Corrosion resistant, Good conductor,
can crack under stress.
does not withstand great loads.
aircraft industry, castings, engine components.
Copper
Good conductor of heat and electricity, corrosion resistant.
danger of electrolysis if joined to iron pipes.
When worked requires constant annealing.
Electrical cables, central heating, printed circuits
zinc
Corrosion resistant.
When worked will become brittle.
Castings,Batteries,Galvanising
Stainless Steel
Consists of: chromium,nickel,steel
corrosion resistant
Expensive and hard to cut
Duralium
Consists of: Aluminium, copper, magnesium, manganese.
lightweight, strong
automobile industry.
Brass
Consists of: Zinc, copper
Casts wel, easy to machine, good conductor of heat and electricity.
susceptible to cracking, needs to be annealed.
central heating valves, electrical components.
