Other Materials Flashcards
Composites (definition)
materials consisting of two or more materials from different classifications to combine and improve the properties of both materials
Examples of Composites and the materials they consist of (7)
CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced polymer) : consists of Carbon fibres and thermosetting polyester resin
GRP (glass reinforced polymer) : glass fibres mixed with polyester resin
Tungsten carbide: ceramic and tungsten particles ( sometimes with cobalt as well )
aluminium composite board : Aluminium sheets with a polyethylene core between them
reinforced concrete : concrete (sand, cement, aggregate and water) and low carbon steel bar
fibre cement: concrete with steel fibres mixed into it
engineered wood: (e.g. MDF) timbre veneer and MF adhesives
Smart materials (definition)
a material that can respond to an input from their environment with a change in physical properties
SMA (shape memory alloy)
metal alloys which change shape with a change in temperature or electrical current
thermochromic pigments
changes colour in response to temperature
phosphorescent pigments
absorbs light and then re-emits it in the dark
photochromic
changes colour in response to light
electroluminescent wire
copper wire with a phosphorescent coating that glows with an A.C
Piezoelectric material
gives an electric current when deformed and increases under an electric current
Modern materials (define )
materials developed there the invention of new or improved processes and evolve as technology advances
