Government turned to him to make plans for a series of underground tunnels to remove human waste from 1 million homes in London, he built 83 miles of sewers, which removed 420 mill gallons of sewerage a day, they were finished in 1866 and cholera never returned to London
Edwin chadwick - 19th century
Secretary to the poor law commissioners, used statistical evidence to explore the link between ill health and poverty, he was part of the driving force behind the setting up of the clean party, Wrote a report in 1842, which made the link between poor living conditions, disease and life expectancy
Florence nightingale - 19th century
In the Crimean war, she cleaned up hospital wards and cut the death rate from 40% to 2%. After the war she wrote the book notes on nursing in 1863 which explained how they could be trained and how they should treat the sick, set up the first nurse training school at Saint Thomas´hospital

Set up ragged school where hungry children were given cheap breakfast and there were evening classes and Sunday schools, he set up a series of homes for children with the slogan no destitute child ever turned away.
